Just installed a fresh XP then downloaded the guru3d.exe file from your link above, ran the setup file and let it detect and install the relevant drivers (all automatically). After a reboot windows XP screen appears for 5 seconds, then everything goes blank and windows fails to load. Safe mode fails to load as does trying it in vga mode ! Even tried running boot logging, then booting to a safe command prompt. this just showed the progress bar across the bottom of the screen, froze then tried booting again normally and blank screened again. The laptop now simply will not do a thing. What’s gone wrong ?

Something really bad has gone wrong !!! Just tried booting back off my USB to gain access to a command prompt. 1st option gives a Hal.dll corruption message, 2nd option just keeps trying to boot to windows, which as previously mentioned just freezes, 3rd option (in case of hal.dll errors…) returns the message I/O error….. bootsect.dos.
Now looks like I can’t even choose a re-install as a solution.
I can only now resort to removal of my hdd, buying a caddy and trying to slave it in a neighbours desktop !!
In 20 years of IT I’ve never been locked out so badly and all after installing and running the file you linked to for a VGA driver.

I’m sorry to hear that
This is UNOFFICIAL driver created by Guru3D. Please use at your own risk! Have you tried to boot another OS such as Ubuntu on your laptop? Or try to create fresh Windows installation on it?

Not sure how I would create an ubuntu bootable USB, besides doesn’t that use a non windows compatible filing system?, sure I’ll look into it.
Fresh windows install, I wish. As explained my xp bootable USB (winflash) boots but cannot do anything with the hdd. Any ideas as to how I can get to a dos prompt only using a usb to boot ?

I think that’s just an Windows failure NOT hardware failure. AFAIK, Windows XP doesn’t support SATA AHCI hard-disk controller which Acer Aspire 722 uses, so it can’t read your hard-disk.
Fortunately, there is a workaround to solve this, please read the following guide:

Good luck!

I’m 100% sure it’s software, it woudn’t get as far as displaying a windows boot screen if it was hardware. Regards Sata, this is correct I had to change the bios to IDE in order to allow me to install the fresh windows XP I had.
Problem is the Guru3D app has obviously messed up the registry as well as changing the bootsector to the point my xp boot usb cannot access it. without access (command prompt) I cannot proceed to fix or reinstall. How can I get to a command prompt ?

I have no idea about that, at least now. I will do fresh install when encounter the problem like that

I just bought an Acer 722 hoping to install XP. Starting at the beginning,
? Do I format/partition the disk?
? Do I install the XP first, or all of these drivers?
? Should I install a specific Hard Drive – If so, what specs/brand?
Thanks very much.
